Here, the encounter follows the natural movement of the animals in open water. There is no feeding to draw them in. Visitors attend a conservation and safety briefing, then head out with trained local guides and boat crews who follow strict rules designed to protect the animals.
Keep your distance. Never touch, chase, feed, block or crowd a whale shark. The aim is not to control the encounter, but to observe these wild animals without disturbing them.
Nothing is staged, and nothing is guaranteed.

They are wild animals, so no day or season can guarantee a sighting. Weather, sea conditions and the natural movement of the sharks all play their part.
If seeing them matters to your journey, it is worth leaving a little space in your plans rather than depending on one tightly scheduled early morning.
What it's like
A morning on open water
After registration and the required briefing, small outrigger boats carrying up to six guests head out into the bay with trained local personnel looking for signs of whale sharks.
Sometimes the encounter lasts only moments: the sudden presence of an immense animal moving just below the surface, then continuing on its way. You have to get in the water at just the right moment.
From Villa Kulintang to Donsol
The experience begins before you reach Donsol
From Villa Kulintang, the early morning begins with a short bangka, the traditional Filipino outrigger boat, crossing to Pilar Port. From there, the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center is approximately 20 minutes by road, passing through coconut groves, rice fields and the rural landscapes of Sorsogon.
Baltazar and the Villa Kulintang team coordinate the morning, from the bangka crossing and the tide to the onward transfer to Donsol by car, tricycle or motorbike.
So it feels like one continuous journey, rather than a series of separate arrangements. You are looked after throughout.

Let nature set the pace
A whale shark encounter is not an attraction with a fixed showtime. The sea may be calm or restless. The sharks may appear quickly, much later, or not at all.
That is why we prefer not to think of Donsol as a hurried excursion fitted between arrival and departure.
If whale sharks are one of the reasons you are travelling to Sorsogon, staying for two or three nights simply gives the experience more room.

Back at Villa Kulintang, the rhythm changes completely
The morning may have been spent scanning the sea for one of the largest animals on earth. The afternoon has a very different texture, slower and more relaxed.
Cool off in the private pool. Have a drink, lunch or dinner at the villa. Find a quiet place in the garden, or simply watch the afternoon light move across the water.
Only one group stays at Villa Kulintang at a time. The pool is yours, the house is yours, and the resident team is there when you need them.

You should be comfortable in open water, but this is snorkeling, not scuba diving. A mask, snorkel and fins are enough, and equipment can be rented locally.
